A Singing Silver Coil
Returning inside from the garden steps to rest for the night, I drifted up toward the soft amber glow beside the sofa. Resting near a ceramic coaster was a small silver spiral spring, standing tipped on its coiled edge and trembling at every faint footstep in the hall. It looked so terribly tense, straining to hold that upright posture. I leaned forward, gently cupping its cold metal arch with both of my plush hands to ease it down. Clink-ting... with a bright, singing rattle, it bounced off the dark walnut and nestled flat around the smooth wooden base of a brass candlestick. A soft, breathy chuckle escaped me; it lay completely tranquil now, glowing quietly for the night.
