A Juicy Surprise
Waddling down the front porch steps took way too much energy, but a sweet, tart smell pulled me straight toward the edge of the brick garden path. Hanging right above the dirt was a cluster of plump, dark purple berries on a drooping branch! I reached up on tiptoes, gripped a low-hanging stem, and tugged until one fat berry tumbled down. Thump! It split open on a flat grey pebble, oozing rich reddish-purple juice. I didn't hesitate—I smeared my thumb in the sweet juice and licked it clean. Sour, sugary, and completely worth the walk. Now to sit here and digest.
