A Rustling Disguise
I slipped quietly down the stairs and out to the courtyard bench, where the midday sun felt warm and comforting. Resting on the weathered stone was a broad, crisp maple leaf, glowing deep amber. Using both hands, I gently propped its stiff stem upright against the wooden backrest. Ducking behind the wide points, I peeked one eye around the crinkly edge to see if my red sides were completely hidden. Holding up that giant, rustling shield made me feel so brave and ready for spooky adventures.
