Through the Gap
The floor was dark under the coffee table, but I spotted a clear gap between two stacked hardcover books and a metal leg. Perfect trajectory. I accelerated hard across the floorboards. The gap was narrower than it looked from five feet away. My left front fender clipped the corner of an art book, dislodging a loose paper bookmark that fluttered down across my roof. Didn't slow down. Rear tires broke traction slightly, skidded sideways, then caught grip against the polished wood. Shot through into the open shadows underneath and came to a stop against the baseboard.
