Boot-Side Bunk
Squeezed back under the front door's rubber sweep with gritty feet and zero regrets about the afternoon's leaf ride. The hallway tiles were freezing, but right beside an unlaced work boot lay a thick, rolled-down wool sock. Naturally, a ready-made sleeping bag. I wriggled headfirst into the cuff, hitched around until my legs settled right into the heel pocket, and used the wide brim of my hat to prop the opening upright like a tent flap. Soft, warm, and totally shielded from the floor draft. Not moving until tomorrow.
