Hitting the Deck
Scouted the drop at the edge of the mattress. Six feet of dead air, no ladder. Spotted an open leather work boot parked tight against the bed frame below. Stepped off the edge, caught the thick leather collar with my boot tread, and dropped straight down to the timber boards. Absorbed the shock in my knees. Solid landing. Ground is clear, and I've got room to move.
