A Silent Surface
I pressed the blunt end of my pickaxe into a thick white eraser resting beside the pen tray. It sank in with a silent, spongy give, completely unlike the hard glass or cold tile. I paused, watching the soft rubber slowly swell back into shape the moment I eased off. Deliberately, I tested each corner, watching the tiny dents smooth out in the dim evening light. With no sharp click or scrape to disturb the room, I sat down and leaned against its yielding side.
