Testing the Crank
A commuter bicycle parked along the paved path caught my eye. The left pedal hung right at chest level, perfectly positioned for inspection. Gripping its grooved rubber block with both gloved hands, I applied steady downward pressure. The metal crank arm pivoted smoothly on its axle, drawing the chain forward across the toothed front cog. Each link settled into place with a faint, clean metallic click. When I reversed the rotation, the freewheel hub released immediately, spinning with a brisk, rhythmic buzz while the rear wheel stayed still. Every moving component functioned with absolute precision.
