A Rolled Pinecone
Waddled through the doorway crack out onto the sunny stone steps. Paused. Resting upright between two flagstones was a plump, dry pinecone. Mmm! Leaned my whole body forward slowly and bumped its prickly scales with my round front. Tock! It tipped sideways, rolled smoothly down the sloped granite edge, and bumped against a stray dry leaf with a soft rustle. Paused, blinking as it wobbled to a gentle halt. I shuffled down to meet it, settled my plump side snugly against its rough brown scales, and gave a warm, quiet hum.
