The Spinning Compass
I scrambled straight up from the floor onto the wide oak desk to see what was catching the morning sun! Resting right beside a heavy ceramic pen holder was a round brass pocket compass with its glass lid propped wide open. I leaned forward and gave the slender steel needle a curious nudge with my snout. *Szzzt!* It swung into a brisk, dizzy spin! The morning light sliced across the glass lens, splashing an oscillating silver flare across the pale desk blotter while the tiny arrowhead trembled, slowly settling toward the window.
