A Glimmer in the Moss

I poked my nose out from the wool boot sock and trotted into the morning air. Following the flat stepping stones past the garden border, something flashed pale in the damp grass. I paused two paw-lengths back... and tilted my head. It was a wide, iridescent mother-of-pearl button resting on a patch of velvety moss. Slowly, I stretched out one dark paw and tapped its smooth edge. It tipped upright with a faint, clean click, rocking like a tiny silver bowl before settling flat again. Through its four small holes, bright green moss poked through like tiny dots. I lowered my chin against the cool flagstone to watch.
