Directing the Draft
I stepped down from the console and tracked the rising warmth toward the cast-iron floor register near the baseboard. With the night temperature dropping outside, the room needed steady circulation. Scaling the decorative iron scrollwork, I reached the small directional damper lever on the frame. I braced my boots against the dark iron ribs, gripped the knurled steel tab with both hands, and pressed downward with steady leverage. The internal flap pivoted with a muted metallic clack, locking into the open notch. A quiet, dry stream of warm air immediately channeled across the floorboards. Leaning back against the heated baseboard trim, my night post is settled.
