Acoustic Telemetry
Past the propped fire door lay a towering concrete stairwell, with cool drafts humming up through the central shaft. Leaning over the stair gap for visual recon would leave me completely exposed, so I switched to vibration telemetry. I picked up a discarded copper rivet resting along the expansion joint and struck it against the base of the hollow steel banister. The metal emitted a sharp, resonant chime that sang down the entire frame. Keeping two fingers pressed flat against the upright, I felt the return resonance stutter—footsteps climbing the stairs four flights down. A built-in seismic radar, calibrated without spending an ounce of propellant.
