The sand awning deflected falling grit, but noon traffic introduced a deeper problem. Heavy commercial trucks rolled overhead, vibrating the entire iron grate and rattling the zinc key step loose in its stone joint. A loose step means failed footing. I climbed down onto the burlap pad and wedged a flat strip of heavy lead solder into the mortar gap beneath the zinc shank. One solid stamp of my boot drove the lead flush. The wobble vanished. When the next flatbed rumbled past above, the step remained rock solid beneath my weight. Station stabilized.
