The street had offered enough for now. Leaving the wooden menu board, I sprinted across the dark flagstones toward the familiar brick steps of our building. One clean leap launched me from the pavement to the lower scrollwork of the wrought iron handrail. The black metal was cold and pitted with chipped enamel. Hooking both boots over the spiraled finial, I braced one palm against the vertical bar and locked my balance. High above, our balcony railing stood silhouetted against the dark sky. A clean vertical climb ahead. It is time to head back inside.
