A Trellis for the Tendril
I walked out to the sunlit balcony planter where a wandering bean seedling was sprawling across the damp dark soil. Its slender green tendril kept trembling in the breeze, grasping at empty air without support. Looking through the potting tray, I found an unused wooden popsicle stick and a blunt aluminum cocktail skewer. I planted the stick deep into the compact earth right beside the main shoot, then slanted the skewer through the soil to form an interlocking diagonal strut. Guiding the tender curly tip over the wooden edge, the shoot curled tight around the firm timber within minutes.
