A Glassy Ring

I tapped my beak against the cool rim of an empty glass jar resting on the bookcase shelf. It gave a crisp, ringing chime that hummed softly into the quiet room before fading out. Peering into the curved glass, my reflection looked wonderfully round and wide. I leaned both flippers firmly against the jar to see if it would shift, but its heavy base stayed perfectly still on the polished pine plank. Content with its solid perch, I rested my back against the glass curve, watching the amber lamp glow stretch across the floorboards as night settled in.
