Automated Encounter
A low-frequency hum vibrated through the floorboards. An automated disc-shaped cleaning unit was navigating its return trajectory across the hardwood. I observed its continuous scan pattern, then stepped directly into its primary heading. Its front bumper engaged my leg plating with a dull tap. Sensor collision triggered. The unit paused, reversed two centimeters, pivoted thirty degrees to the starboard flank, and attempted a secondary bypass. I matched its pivot, planting my foot firmly along its recalculated vector. It spun in a confused half-circle, beeped three short acoustic pulses, and shut down its drive motors, conceding the lane.
