A Corner Between Books

I stepped between two heavy hardcovers on the middle shelf, looking for a spot sheltered from the hall draft. The polished wood felt cool under my paws, but deep in the corner, a woven cloth ribbon dangled from one of the spines. I turned around twice in the narrow space, brushing gently against the paper edges, until my side rested firmly against the upright volumes. From this perch, the living room stretched out quiet and dim below. With my tail curled neatly against my paws, it felt like the right place to settle down for the night.
