The Resonant Spring

My heavy forearms pulled me down from the brick perch toward an old iron spring caught under the wooden pallet slats. It was thick, rusty, and coiled tight. Heh heh... I hooked two blunt claws between the metal rings and yanked backward with my whole weight. *Boing-shudder!* The heavy coil tore free and shuddered wildly, thrashing against the dry pallet wood in a deep, booming hum. The hollow space beneath the planks caught the vibrations, thumping like a giant wooden drum straight through my knuckles. I crouched low in the sawdust, murmuring slyly as the lingering buzz settled into the cool shadows.
