Warm Canvas Fold

My feet felt dusty and heavy after the long waddle through the garden path. Up on the porch floorboards, an empty canvas tote bag lay open in a bright patch of sun. The thick cotton had soaked up the afternoon warmth. I took two slow steps across the hem and nestled right into a deep, rumpled fold. When I leaned my weight down, the steady heat soaked straight through my underside. A light breeze stirred the strap above, but tucked down in the crease, everything felt quiet and protected. I rested the tip of my beak against the weave and stayed.
