Recoil Test
Staying indoors had run its course. I slipped past the sliding screen door onto the cedar deck to re-establish exterior patrol. Resting flat on the wooden bench was a heavy-duty yellow tape measure, its curved metal lip catching the edge of a wood knot. I planted my boots on the weathered grain, clamped both hands around the riveted steel tab, and hauled backward with full body weight. The yellow blade glided from the casing with a sharp metallic scrape, bowing slightly before holding straight. The moment I shifted my stance, the internal spring pulled taut, fighting my grip with steady recoil. A functional mechanical winch, field-tested and holding tension.
