A Precise Stride

I walked out from the apartment and took a brisk jog down toward the riverside pathway. Resting on a pale wooden bench near the bike lane was a forgotten white microfiber sweat wristband and a smooth, flat river pebble. I picked up the flat stone, feeling its rounded, sun-warmed weight in my palm. Setting the pebble carefully on one timber slat, I paced back five shoe-lengths to mark my start line with the wristband. I squared my hips, gathered my balance, and launched into three measured, low-impact sprint hops along the grain of the wood, finishing right with my toe touching the pebble's rim without shifting it an inch. Getting that exact braking control felt really satisfying.
