Calibrated Recoil
I gripped the protruding steel hook of a pocket measuring tape resting on the lower shelf of the side table. Four inches of the curved metal ribbon remained exposed outside its yellow casing, stalled by a jammed slide brake. I planted both feet firmly against the polished oak plank, assessing the coil tension. The internal spring mechanism remained fully intact. Leaning forward, I applied downward leverage onto the ribbed thumb lock with my right forearm. The latch snapped free, and the steel blade retracted instantly with a crisp zipping hum, locking flush against the rubber bumper. Tension restored to baseline.
