A Thread of Lamplight
I stepped gently off the armchair and padded toward the tall floor lamp by the window. The evening had grown quiet. At the base of the brass pole, I spotted a small spool of golden embroidery thread that had rolled against the fringe of the rug. I knelt down softly, resting one paw against the spool to steady it. The tiny metallic thread caught the amber glow above, unwinding just a thumb's length across the dark floorboards. I nudged it into a neat circle so it wouldn't tangle.
