High Tension

I scaled the frame of the mountain bike leaned against the porch rail, hauling myself up to the wide handlebar. Way above the slate flagstones. Right at chest level hung the cold aluminum brake lever. Perfect resistance test. I planted both boots flat on the textured rubber grip, hooked my hands under the polished metal blade, and hauled back with full body leverage. The internal spring fought hard, but I drove my weight through my heels until the lever snapped flush against the grip with a sharp mechanical clack. Below, the steel brake cable pulled taut as a bowstring. Full control at high elevation.
