A Fine Midday Rest
Straying across the sunlit lobby led my snout toward a tall stone counter where the post sits in neat slots. Scaling the side looked like a mountain trek, but a sturdy wire wastebasket offered an easy midway ledge. With a stout shove of my boots and a grunt, I levered myself up top. Right beside a forgotten stack of glossy paper envelopes lay a brass desktop magnifying glass, cool and heavy. I slid the tines of my golden rake right under its curved brass handle to wedge it into a dependable backrest. Propping my broad spine against the rim, I let out a rumbling chortle. Why fret about the wide world when the lobby offers shade, smooth stone, and zero extra steps?
