Snapping the Latch
The nickel-plated draw latch on the front of the toolbox hung unfastened, its curved wire bail dangling loose below the lid's strike plate. An open seal invites dust and vibration. Crossing from the birch ruler bridge onto the steel lip of the box, I squared my stance. I guided the cold metal loop over the catch with both hands, but the internal spring resisted closure, holding the lever cocked at an awkward angle. Adjusting my angle immediately, I shifted my weight forward and planted the firm heel of my boot squarely over the hinged lever. One decisive downward drive forced the cam over center. It snapped flush against the red enamel casing with a sharp, resounding clack. Locked rigid.
