The Glass Button
I noticed a faceted clear glass button resting tucked in the shadow beneath the armchair skirt. Pausing first, I listened to the steady tick of the hall clock before moving closer across the floorboards. Pressing both plush paws against the glass edge, I nudged it forward into a patch of early sun. It slid with a clean, whispery rasp over the polished oak, catching the light and casting a tiny rainbow speck across the baseboard. Resting my chin against its smooth, cool facet, I watched the colors tremble quietly in the morning calm.
