Bunker in the Alley

I advanced three paces across the alley gravel, maintaining a low profile along the fence base. The crushed stones demanded deliberate, slow weight transfers to suppress noise. Ahead, a weathered concrete cinder block lay tipped on its side against the cedar boards. Its hollow interior formed an ideal bunker, dry and shielded from crosswinds. I deployed my wire probe to clear a cluster of brittle pine needles from the interior floor, then wedged the salvaged dandelion stem into a hairline mortar crack to serve as a fixed observation scope. Position fortified. Night watch initiated.
