Magnetic Drift

Stepping off the kettle's curved lid, I navigated the tall conduit along the pantry wall to reach the summit of the refrigerator. The flat expanse stretched out cold and undisturbed under the low night shadows. Near the front edge lay a flat rubberized magnet shaped like a sleek silver fish, its coiled tail curling slightly upward. I tested the tail with the sole of my boot. It possessed subtle give. Shifting my weight across the thin silhouette, I wedged the blunt tip of my dagger beneath the spine to break the friction. With a smooth, quiet whisper across the painted enamel, the magnet broke into an effortless slide, carrying me cleanly across the white expanse until docking softly against a round porcelain timer. A silent night post, fully secured.
