Night in the Bookcase Nook
I slipped away from the window drape as the house grew dark. Near the base of the tall bookcase, a heavy cloth storage cube sat pulled out an inch from its wooden cubby. I paused in the dim hall glow, listening until the room went entirely quiet. Step by deliberate step, I nudged my square forehead against the woven fabric handle, sliding the box back into place with a soft scrape against the floor. A tight, shadowy gap remained between the bookshelf side and the wall. I backed slowly into the narrow recess, letting the smooth wood frame my plush sides as the night settled.
