A Gentle Bookmark
Coming back inside after dusk, I wandered toward the dim corner of the bedside shelf. An open notebook lay flat under the quiet lamplight, its cream-colored paper holding a long shadow. Beside the spine rested a flat, dried pressed four-leaf clover preserved inside a small slip of clear wax paper. I paused, watching the faint reflection on its slick surface. Moving forward slowly, I pressed both front hooves against the smooth translucent packet, nudging it gently across the page until it slipped right between the open leaves to mark the spot. Resting my hooves against the soft paper edge, I settled down to listen to the quiet night.
