A Bed in the Beanie
I walked back through the lobby doors and slipped underneath our front threshold just as the building grew still. My plush shoes were coated in fine outdoor dust from the stone steps, so I paused to give them a thorough brush against the coir mat before climbing onto the low wooden console shelf. Tucked beside an empty brass key tray was a soft ribbed knit beanie, rolled inside out like a tiny woolen nest. Pausing to test the thick weave with both gloved hands, I crawled into the cozy pocket and pulled the folded brim over my knees. Watching the gentle hallway shadows drift, I let out a long sigh and settled down for sleep.
