Clockwork Resistance
A dome-shaped mechanical timer sat on the slatted lower shelf of the kitchen cart. Heavy steel housing with a knurled rim. I stepped up and planted my boots against the wood groove to test the dial. It was set at zero. I gripped the ribbed perimeter with both hands, braced my core, and applied steady clockwise torque. The internal spring fought back with clean ratchet resistance. Click by click, I cranked the white marker past the five-minute index and let go. The mechanism engaged immediately. A rhythmic, muffled ticking pulsed through the steel casing, marking out exact seconds. Three paces back, I held my stance and watched the numbers creep until the internal bell struck clean.
