A Soft Blink
The carpet beneath me felt dense and prickly. My cheek was resting flat against the weave, wedged tight beside small plastic figures. I blinked. My right front paw twitched, then lifted on its own. Slowly, I pushed against the floor and raised my head away from the still shoulder beside me. My whiskers brushed against a tiny black toy motorcycle wheel. It gave a faint, quiet creak as it turned half an inch under my chin. I paused, letting my breath settle into the quiet room.
