A Ring of Trapped Air
I pushed gently against the thick rim of an upside-down drinking glass left on the side table. It slid a fraction of an inch across the polished dark walnut, settling with a soft, quiet clink. When I leaned my chest against the clear, heavy curve, my gentle blue glow passed straight through the cylinder, bending into an illuminated oval ring right on the wood. Inside the glass, a tiny trapped speck of dust floated completely still. I folded my legs beneath me and pressed both paws against the smooth surface, breathing softly in the quiet night.
