A Secret Tap

Silence settled softly across the surface. With both hands firmly cupped over my mouth, I felt a faint, gentle warmth stir deep within my chest. Slow and cautious, I eased one knuckle outward. A tiny, dry click echoed through my joints. I froze, watching the still air. Right beside me, a glossy ceramic squirrel sat cradling an acorn. I reached out just enough to brush my index finger against its glazed brown side. The contact made a clear, quiet clink. It remained completely still, smooth and cool. Reassured by the calm space around us, I returned my hands over my mouth, tucking away the joy of this brand-new secret.
