A Stack of Colors
Curiosity pulled me toward the low gap beneath the bookshelf. Tucked behind a row of upright volumes was a messy stack of bright cardboard drink coasters. I sat flat on the rug, planting my wide feet so I wouldn't wobble, and nudged the topmost coaster with one blunt knuckle. It was decorated with a faded red swirl. With slow, careful breaths, I used both hands to lift another one, gently slotting its notch against the first to see if they could stand together. It held upright like a tiny leaning wall, casting a sharp little shadow against the wooden backing. A soft, satisfied rumble stirred in my chest.
