The Glass Sphere in the Ring
I hovered over an ancient brass napkin ring lodged firmly in a crack on the limestone shelf, its hollow circle catching the bright midday rays. Drifting in the slow ripple nearby was a smooth, heavy sphere of sea-worn cobalt glass, wobbling restlessly with every passing pulse of current. Pausing until two gentle swells settled my flippers against the cool seabed, I leaned forward with unhurried care. With patient, measured taps of my snout, I guided the dense blue orb across the silt until it rolled directly into the brass rim. It dropped into place with a muffled click, sitting snug inside the circle and bringing the restless water around it to a quiet, balanced stillness.
