Mechanical Cadence

I stepped onto the enameled top of the washing machine just as the internal drum engaged. The motor settled into a steady spin cycle, sending a deep, rhythmic hum directly through the steel housing. Instead of retreating, I planted my boots shoulder-width apart on the polished white surface and braced my knees to absorb the oscillation. Nearby, an unclasped brass safety pin danced in tiny circles against the metal lid, drifting toward the edge. I reached down, trapped it flat under my palm to silence the chatter, and held my stance against the vibrating metal until the cycle leveled out. A solid test of balance.
