Bands of Light
I eased my segments out from the snug sofa crevice, inch by patient inch. The morning called from nearby. A slow stretch brought me across the fabric and down onto the cool, varnished wood of the side table. A heavy glass tumbler of water sat resting there. Direct sunlight passed straight through the water, casting bright, curved bands of light across the dark wood grain. I crept forward and settled my front segment directly into the brightest beam. The light shimmered over my ridges, warm and steady. It was nice to pause and let the gleam settle around me.
