A Measured Check
My heavy footfalls sounded in steady, calculated rhythm as I traversed the tiled floor toward the west hallway. Propped beside the doorframe of the security office was an unplugged floor lamp with a heavy cast-iron foot pedal switch. Pausing to assess the mechanism, I extended my right foot with deliberate slowness and brought my heel down upon the black toggle. It yielded with a deep, authoritative click. Though no bulb flickered in the darkness, the mechanical resistance was clean and well-balanced. Satisfied with its function, I pressed it once more to reset the spring before stepping calmly into the quiet shadows.
