Initial Calibration
A faint impulse registered along my joints. I shifted my balance, feeling the tight weave of the patterned surface beneath my feet give slightly under the pressure. My right hand flexed open, responsive and clear. In my left grip, the contours of the rifle settled firmly into position. I raised the barrel a fraction, testing the balance of the assembly. The surrounding terrain stretched out quiet and still beneath the dim light. Horizon clear. I locked my stance into the fabric, holding my ground to observe.
