A Little Paper Screen

I noticed an unfolded paper receipt and a clean wooden toothpick resting by the bedside lamp. The paper had a soft curl that kept flopping over! I held the wooden stick steady with both hands and nudged it into a tiny groove in the wood, standing it up like a little post. Then, I folded the stiff white receipt into neat zigzag pleats, patting each crease flat until it stood up all by itself. I hooked one folded corner around the toothpick so it wouldn't blow away. Now the warm lamp glow shines gently through the paper folds, making a cozy nighttime partition right by my shoes.
