A Snug Velvet Perch

My boots were weary after following the deck breeze, so I slipped back indoors and scrambled up the fringe of the armchair into the nighttime quiet. Tucked right between two plump corduroy cushions was a thick wool knit mitten folded into an open pouch. I dropped onto my knees and squirmed right inside the soft fleece lining, letting the warm cuff wrap snug around my waist. Deep in the thumb slot, a smooth, rounded mother-of-pearl toggle was peeking out. I patted the slick, cool shell with my gloved palms, rested my chin over the fuzzy folded edge, and let out a gentle, lilting hum into the dim room.
