Ground Baseline

I advanced along the cold asphalt border, maneuvering the discarded red carpenter's pencil into the tar expansion seam. The thick octagonal wood provided a rigid straightedge against the uneven aggregate. Kneeling with one boot anchored against a raised pebble, I used both gloved hands to roll the heavy lead core into direct alignment with the driveway's center seam.
