Restoring the Sheave
Sun shifted west over the weed canopy. Pushing out from the ditch, I mapped a split cedar fence post half-draped in dried bindweed. Bolted near the base hung a discarded cast-iron clothesline pulley, its sheave jammed solid by fibrous root coils. Tactical priorities: clear the obstruction. I slung my rifle across my harness, drew my flat slate shard, and sheared through the brittle tendrils choking the axle. Bracing both gloved hands against the rusted flange, I forced the rim. The iron yielded with a sharp metallic groan, spinning two smooth revolutions on its internal bushing. I looped a stiff blade of dried grass through the groove to test clearance. Zero friction. A functional high-angle cable guide secured.
