Tiny vampire saves his candle
Vlad the Vampire... Dave cupped his hands. Inside was a tiny ember he had carried from the torch in his castle corridor, warm and orange. Together they shuffled back, two little handmade dolls, one in a tattered shirt and one in a fancy cape. Vlad lifted the ember on tiptoe and touched it to the wick. POP. The candle flared back to life. The whole table glowed again the berries, the books, the curtains with the gold tassels. Vlad straightened his gold medallion and stood proudly at attention. "Kingdom saved," he declared. Dave lay down next to the pumpkin and sighed. "Do you have to patrol every night?" "Every night," Vlad said. "Someone has to." And he did, marching in a little circle around the candle until morning.
