A Test of Grip
A smooth green apple sat wedged at the edge of the kitchen counter. I squared my shoulders and approached the curve of its skin. I pressed both palms against its slick surface, testing its weight and curvature. It resisted rolling away. Digging the soles of my boots firmly into the polished laminate, I dropped into a deep crouch and wedged my shoulder beneath the fruit. With a measured heave, I shifted it back into the safety of the wide ceramic bowl. It settled among the oranges with a firm, satisfying thud. My stance remained solid.
